I thought I saw the other day, maybe it was the On3 Web site, that he was committing in a matter of days, and the two finalists appeared to be GT and Yale.

Mike is it possible to get a breakdown of who they are really involved with at this point? Or is it still murky? I’m curious both about who they are pursuing, and why in some cases they aren’t. If we look at top 100 kids that they are either reported to be pursuing or are in the Northeast so you’d think they’d be involved…(and I know some rankings are slightly different; and other than calling out Griffiths I left other commits off)
1. Dajuan Wagner (no chance)
6. Justin Edwards (no involvement)
7. Matas Buzelis (offer, no chance)
21. Aaron Bradshaw (no involvement)
26. Isaiah Miranda (offer)
32. Talor Bowen (no involvement?)
33. Gavin Griffiths (offer, very little pursuit)
40. Ugonna Kingsley Onyenso (offer; btw JP destroyed him last weekend which is what pushed Duke into offering supposedly)
50. Akil Watson (no involvement)
63. TJ Power (no involvement)
67. JP Estrella (offer, long shot)
74. Aaron Clark (no involvement)
80. Elmarko Jackson (offer, strong involvement)
89. Al Amadou (no involvement)
91. Reid Ducharme (offer, strong involvement)
98. Ty-Laur Johnson (no involvement)
100. Mouhamed Dioubate (no involvement)

By no means am I saying each of those kids should truly be a target for SU, and rankings aren’t everything. But the rankings are suggestive enough that we can say it’s tough to make a living on kids well outside that range, and especially at volume. It just seems aimless to me…and meanwhile Duke is hiring former Nike executives to help kids manage the NIL….

Really thorough post, I would like to see us get involved with Ty-Laur, not sure if we will.

As a point to our other conversation, we should not be limited to this, there are international and juco kids that we should focus on since we don’t appear to be heavy the NIL route unfortunately.

Really good post.

Thanks. I’m in Covid isolation and trying to entertain myself! By no means am I saying that this list should be exhaustive; while I’m less convinced of the JUCO route, I agree there’s no question they have to have some strategy there and internationally. My issue is that I truly don’t think they have an overall strategy, or a recruiting engine to really do well internationally either (or anyone else). If they hadn’t found Mintz late, this class would be a concern. As it is, if they are constantly bringing in projects, it’s a hard way to make a living in the days of the portal. We’re suddenly just playing like a mid-level program. I think it’s the programs inability or unwillingness to adapt; whether that’s the NIL, ramping up internationally….that’s what I mean that I’m just not sure there’s a strategy.

Here's my take, but I have no intel and this is solely based on analyst comments, recruiting services, media articles, etc.
Wagner (he's said SU still recruits him, but I imagine it's Louisville or Kentucky in the end)
Edwards (his trimmed list didn't include SU)
Buzelis (his trimmed list didn't include SU)
Bradshaw (his trimmed list didn't include SU, and I don't think he was ever offered)
Miranda (focused on other schools)
Bowen (focused on other schools, never offered)
Griffiths (committed to Rutgers)
Kingsley (seems to be focused on Kentucky, Kansas, UConn and maybe LSU)
Estrella (priority, but long shot with Duke now in the picture)
Elmarko (priority, hopeful to land a visit)
Reid (priority, visiting soon, per Mike)
Clark (I believe the SU staff visited Brewster last September, and reportedly watched Clark, along with Reid, Matas, Taylor, etc. Not sure if there's interest these days)
Papa Kante (focused on other schools)

Tafara Gapare was offered at the end of April, but he committed to DePaul
Kaden Cooper was offered at the end of April, but he has a ton of offers and is reportedly visiting Gonzaga, LSU, Oklahoma, etc.

Others whom I believed were offered: Spencer Mahoney (no idea what's going on there), Simeon Wilcher (UNC commit), Elijah Fisher (Texas Tech commit), G.G. Jackson (UNC commit), Aden Holloway (down to, I believe, Auburn, Tennessee, Miami and Wake Forest)...did I miss anyone??

As Mike mentioned, iffy whether SU actually offered Blue Cain
No idea about Watson, Power, Amadou, Johnson and Dioubate

I guess my point is that no matter how you slice it, SU is hurting right now recruiting. For a program of SU’s stature to have the general results they have for the last 7 or so years (a couple ok tournament runs have covered up some messes) and be so out of contention with blue chippers is a real concern. There are pieces to like about the incoming class…but you look at where they started out tracking and who they were involved with, and it’s a tough story that Mintz mostly saved. I’m sure a couple guys will be better than expected (I don’t like Taylor’s jumper but I think he’s a good overall player for instance), but generally kids are going to need time to develop that the program sort of doesn’t have. There’s reason for optimism about next season, and there’s also a whole lot of reason for clear concern.

The state of the program is a whole other discussion and a valid one, but this is a recruiting thread. You have every right to an opinion on the 22 class, but 247 has it as top 20, and rivals as top 10, and those are the “experts”.

I would love to hear more about new names , recruiting strategy, etc. I personally don’t want to turn this thread into a rabbit hole of where the program is at.

Dior's so coming back to SU lol. Man, he went to like a dozen high schools and now has de-committed from two colleges. Head pro, buddy.

Fair point, and duly noted. The only thing I would say though is recruiting is the engine for everything else. They can’t keep struggling with it. Believe me, I want to be wrong about this class, and if it wasn’t the current “perform now or leave” era I wouldn’t have the same concerns. But again, duly noted and moving on.

It’s really just Elmarko Jackson, Reid Ducharme and JP Estrella as the main guys right now. I know they’re evaluating others (no names as of now) but it’s mainly those three that they’re actually involved with.
