Benny Williams

I'm very glad to see Benny playing in this event and not just working with trainers and coaches during the summer. He needs game experience against college and above guys, become more instinctive instead of thinking too much. He's also been playing in a DC summer league called the Kenner League. It's for college level players and above. A lot of college players from the DC area schools. Also former college players playing pro somewhere. It's not a lot of games, and there's minimal information online. I've seen a couple tweets mentioning Benny. One said Benny Williams is showing off the full package now, another said he led his team with 11 points and 6 rebounds. This season, Jesse is going to be Jesse, probably better. Joe is going to be Joe, probably better off the ball. I have zero doubts about Judah and expect him to be very good from the first game. Taylor, Bunch, and Brown will give us enough as the fifth starter and forwards off the bench. Symir will be a quality third guard. Benny doesn't have to be a star, he just has to be a ballplayer instead of an anxious, tentative kid. I think he's the key to the season, the difference between a team that's a little better than last season or a team that's a lot better.

Benny is playing live in Spain right now at this link. He's #0 in dark. Different on-court hairstyle this year with his hair pulled back behind a headband. Bunch does similarly.

I watched this off and on. Benny’s on-court deameanor was quite different than last season. Instead of an anxious uncertain kid who was thinking instead of doing, he moved more confidently and aggressively around the court. He didn’t have the ball in his hands much, but he was looking to do productive things without the hesitation of last year. Not a huge leap yet, but we don’t need him to be a star this season, just a solid complementary player to the three main scorers.

From today’s second game. I didn’t see it but heard Benny was hitting the offensive glass, also hit a couple midrange jumpers. Second on team in both scoring and rebounding. From what I saw yesterday even in his less impressive game, he’s a different guy out on the court than what we saw as a freshman. Looking to get involved and make plays instead of hesitant and full of self-doubt.

I just caught a few minutes of Benny's final game today and there's no box yet, but somebody who watched said he had about 5 points, 10 boards. I saw him go after a rebound more aggressively than an opponent and grabbed it. Never did that last year, just got easy uncontested rebounds. Also saw him anticipate a pass to a cutter, moving before the pass, stepped in and the guy had to stop dribbling and pass it back outside. Last season Benny never was ahead of a play happening, always reacting too late. That guy is gone. I'm sure he will be up and down early this season, but Benny will be a good player at Syracuse. I think he's good this season, especially the back half, and explodes his junior season and turns pro after it.

Today‘s third and final game. In less than half the game, Benny grabbed 11 rebounds, 1/4 of his team’s rebounds. The rest of the team for the entire game got 31. He even outebounded Hugley, who’s been putting up big numbers.

I love it when Benny rebounds. I think he can be a fierce rebounder for us this year and a good scorer as well. His inside presence will help us a lot.
