Will Buddy still leave if Syracuse has a down year and doesn’t make the tournament? Even if his shooting percentages are down for the year? Might not help his marketability going forward.
Good question. We all thought Garrett Williams would leave for the NFL after this past season, but a down year marred by injuries and he's back.

If the season were to end today, Buddy would not be drafted. The NBA doesn't want mediocre 6'6" shooters with subpar athleticism.

I don't see how coming back for a fifth year playing against college kids helps Buddy's game or in the draft. There's nothing scouts will see next year that they haven't already seen. But although he said before the season this was his last, I think there is a small possibility if this season is a disaster that he comes back for the team and his father, not for himself.

I thought before the season that Swider was likely to be gone after this year, for the same reason--at some point you have to start playing against grown men instead of college students year after year, even if it's G League or overseas. But all Swider's shown so far is that he's not the knockdown shooter he's supposed to be. For both Buddy and Cole, any chance of them making the NBA won't be because of their iso skills or anything else, it will be because they don't often miss open threes. Scouts have seen enough from Buddy in the past to know he can knock down open shots at a high rate, but not Cole. There's plenty of far more athletic guys than him who shoot just as well or better. It's possible he realizes the NBA is not in his future and decides to come back rather than play overseas.

Nope, he's nowhere near being drafted. But in the NBA he wouldn't be the focus of the defense and might get better shots than he does this year. He's shown that he can be very good bullying a defender into the paint for a midrange jumper, but I doubt he can do that in the NBA or would get drafted for that. They would want him to shoot threes and not hurt the team on defense when he's out there but that will be tough. He will likely have to go to the G League and show enough to get a call up like Brissett and Hughes have.

I actually think that Buddy will have a long professional career. Just not in the NBA. The rules are different in Europe and they take away some thing players that are more athletically gifted can do. It kinda levels the playing field. Not really a knock on him imo. European money is solid these days.

Every college teams best defender is a worse defender than anyone that would guard buddy. Brissett and Hughes are both 5 times the athlete buddy is, and Hughes is a better shooter (shooting 50% on the year) and averages a whopping 6 minutes a game. I don't see a situation in which Buddy ever sniffs an NBA roster.

We need guys ready now the way this team looks. Can’t be confident in landing those huge prospects like Lands when so many of the top end guys base their decision on how much money they will make. Syracuse has shown they are unwilling to play the game. We get JJ and Lands we would be talking a huge class. As it stands it’s solid. I think Taylor starts. I think they look for a grad transfer at forward to give the others time to get college ready. And besides Taylor, Bunch gets some PT off the bench. Lands would start. JJ would start. Syracuse is not a tough sell for basketball. Lands made it obvious he was looking for money. I’m suspecting that might’ve happened with JJ. Just my opinion but you can’t keep sitting back and watching schools openly recruit using NIL and decide we can’t. The NCAA is gonna do nothing about it. And everyone knows it. Those kids should be in our class.
Whole recruiting game has changed, NIL has made it even easier for teams to pay players and the SEC teams like LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas are dominating recruiting.

Lands and Westry basically let it be known they wanted to get paid, but those are types we used to get and have not been landing lately and are missing that athleticism badly.

We need to add athletes and I hope we add atleast a forward and guard through the portal or juco.

I don’t believe we will land our big targets when everyone else’s participates openly in NIL recruiting and we do not. You’re not gonna go to Cuse for nothing when 3 schools are offering you $100k. NIL is not about how much you are worth in college. That may have been the intent but it’s not realistic. It’s about boosters paying kids to play for their school. It’s not like it’s a few schools openly doing it. It’s literally everyone but us I feel like.

I understand players being able to profit off their NIL, but it’s still illegal for boosters to outright pay kids to attend their alma mater, right? Even with NIL, this would still be considered an improper inducement or an illegal “pay for play”. The NIL agreement is supposed to be commensurate with fair market value. Now I’m sure that some schools or boosters are flirting with skirting the rules, but we aren’t suggesting that Syracuse do that and run the risk of facing sanctions while the involved players are declared ineligible, are we? If other schools are doing it, let them face the eventual crackdown. Am I being naive? Or is the NCAA totally turning a blind eye? I know their power seems to be getting reduced by the powerful conferences, but this will certainly ruin college basketball if the inmates are allowed to run the asylum.

Yes it is illegal, but that's what is happening in a lot of places. No Syracuse is not one of those places.

It is Illegal by NCAA rules. The problem is after the Supreme Court took the case on capping educational expenses for college athletes they likened the NCAA to a business and held them to business laws in the United States. Every court room in the country now is gonna go off of the Supreme Courts precedent. The American anti trust act says that businesses cannot artificially cap a market. So you can’t have every restaurant owner in Syracuse getting together and saying “we will all only pay $10 to cooks and not any more”. That is illegal for businesses to do in the United States. If the ncaa is considered a business in the court room they can’t do it either. So getting all the universitys together about capping NIL as a pay for play are illegal as long as they are considered a business. They know it is. They know they would lose in court. That’s why it’s not being policed. Because if they come down on it and it gets appealed they will lose.

The NCAA is playing a game right now. They don’t want to pay players out of their own bottom line. They don’t want to provide insurance. So they are staying away from the court room at all costs. This is being pushed by presidents and ADs. So they catch something and throw a “probation” penalty at it. So basically nothing. So that the court room can’t test the legality of their rules. Which are illegal. Lots of schools understand this. Syracuse does not.

The Supreme Court explicitly told the NCAA to either get Congress to pass a law to make their practices legal or collectively bargain with the players. They have done neither. So are they gonna go back to the Supreme Court and say “yeah you know that stuff you told us to do? We just ignored it.” They want to stay out of the court room.

The pay for play rules quite frankly do not matter. That’s why it’s openly being ignored by every SEC school, Louisville, Notre Dame, Duke, and even Rutgers. Everyone is doing it except us.

It feels like not participating in the college football arms race all over again.

It was reported that Caleb Williams was offered $2 mill to play at Georgia. The next day he was in the portal. Quinn Ewers got $4 mill the day he committed to Texas. Without ever playing a snap. They aren’t even hiding the ball. Rutgers paid for a quarterback. They are doing nothing about it. And will continue to do nothing about it.

The first block is of Kansas commit Grady Dick (incredible shooter) and the second is of Kentucky commit Chris Livingston. Although Chris needs to become more involved inside, he does not shy away from going up against the future NBA talent that’s throughout the NIBC. Livingston is a 5-star bruiser who had a breakaway dunk and Chris chased him down from the side and timed his run to meet him at the rim. I like that Chris plays with a little cockiness and an edge.
