Darren Harris (2024 SF)

In his first game of Peach Jam and playing up a year, Darren Harris hit his first three ten seconds into the game, he hit his second three at the thirty-six second mark, and next possession he was fouled shooting a three and hit two of them. After one minute and eleven seconds of play, Harris had Takeover up 8-0. The box score does not do justice to how he dominated the game and I'm pretty sure the boxscore is inaccurate. I saw him hit five threes, the first four of which registered on the scoreboard as threes, (didn't notice the scoreboard on the last). Not sure what happened with the box. After hitting the first two, the opponent tried to play him very tight and the floor was open for his teammates. He moves well without the ball and uses screens. His six free throws came while getting fouled on threes twice. They tried everything to stop him from getting his shot off. Once coming around a screen a defender stuck his foot out and tripped him. He did all this while only playing 18 minutes. Donnie Freeman did some good things early also.

Harris is an exceptional shooter, with a high, quick, effortless release. He just finished tenth grade, yet he doesn't play tentative like most who play up a year. I really hope Syracuse is a serious player in his recruitment. I know we want to be because Boeheim loves shooters, and he's probably as good as any in his class. He's still almost two and a half years from playing his first game at Syracuse.

Darren Harris is all the way up to #39 in the just-released new ESPN rankings. Team Takeover will be anchored next season by Isaiah Abraham, Donnie Freeman, and Harris, all of whom played up a year with the U17s this summer. All three started and helped the team make the championship game, which is pretty remarkable.

I've seen people call Darren Harris Baby Klaystation. Besides contacting Harris in June when teams were first allowed, we also contacted Juni Mobley, 6'2" point guard out of Vegas who could be called Baby Steph. Patterns himself after Steph, has an incredible shooting touch out to very deep. Ranked about 50 and maybe not the point guard that Cadeau and Wright are, but he would be a lot of fun to watch. I watched a few of his U16 games at Nike. Very crafty in creating space for his low-release shot, seems to be able to score at will. Other than the initial tweets in mid-June saying we were one of the schools who contacted the two of them, I haven't seen anything about Syracuse with either. But right now I'm allowed to dream of Baby Steph and Baby Klaystation together at Syracuse lighting up the Dome by shooting the hell out of the ball.

Yeah, I saw that tweet from Jake as well. I feel like other than the initial tweet from Jake about SU reaching out to Darren when the contact period opened up on June 15, there's been nothing doing in his recruitment as it relates to the Orange. Stinks.

I'm hoping that before most of the 2024 recruits decide next year, we have a strong season, especially from DMV guys like Judah and Benny, and maybe some clarity on the coaching situation. Even though it doesn't seem we're doing well now with the loaded DMV guys, we could be in a better situation with them when recruiting/AAU season heats up in April.

Yeah, I had hoped that SU would make a run at Darren. Bummer. I believe SU was going to visit Jadyn Harris though during the fall recruiting period.

Looks like Duke to me. He just visited there this weekend and on Monday he says he's seen enough and is ready to announce. Harris likely won't play right away at Duke. He's not an elite athlete or elite in other aspects of the game besides shooting. But it's a beautiful shot.

Juni Mobley announced for Ohio St. the other day. Harris, Mobley, and Elijah Moore seem to be regarded as the best shooters in the class and Syracuse showed interest in all of them. Mobley is a lot of fun to watch. Will launch from anywhere inside the gym and still shoot it very well with the ball softly floating to the basket, similar to Bunch but shoots from even deeper. Has Chris's low release and he's a half foot shorter, but he's very clever and can find his shot easily. Not sure Ohio St is the best school for him even though he's from Ohio.

An interesting nugget in this article. Duke's roster might be overstuffed on the perimeter next year. Duke already has commitments from five-star wing Isaiah Evans and from top shooter Darren Harris. They are also in the mix for Dylan Harper, VJ Edgecombe, and Tyler Betsey. Shaw says they will make a push for the excellent shooter Kon Knueppel. Shaw says Duke currently has the momentum with Cooper Flagg. He says if Flagg were to commit to Duke, a source told him Evans and Darren Harris might be on the move.

Darren Harris started alongside Donnie Freeman for two years with the top level Takeover team, making the championship game with both playing up a year and starting, and then winning it this year. At the top of this thread is a tweet saying we contacted Harris when we could first contact him in June '22. That didn't seem to go anywhere. But three things have changed with us since then. Red's now the head coach and we've hired Straughn, both Takeover guys, and we've gotten Donnie.

Unlike Bethea, Harris is not a guy who could potentially switch to the point, so him and Elijah overlap quite a bit. Harris is a little taller and heavier than Elijah and would be better suited playing the three in a smaller lineup. I wonder if we would make a play for him if he decommits.
