I know this is a few days early but I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts here. And let’s face it, if you subscribe to Mike you play madden on franchise mode so you like it too.
I’ll start off by saying I’m not on the fire Dino train. I never have been. A lot of why I think that has to do with finances. But I also do not think he has lost the team. Dan Mullen clearly lost Florida.
I do think we take a hard look at Gilbert. It’s not working. He didn’t help Tommy get through his progressions. We are unable to throw the football with any type of consistency. He’s not as involved in recruiting as you want him to be. I mean Tony White is the one that offered Jalen Daniels. That could be an indication that Gilbert might be on his way out. If they cut ties with Gilbert you don’t want Daniels to be closest to the guy they just fired.
We also have to look at why it is not working on special teams. Lustig left us in as good of shape as possible. And yet the Lou groza award winner is missing kicks you count on him to make. The punting has been bad. We are not covering well on kicks. Reno is running special teams without the official title. I’m guessing he’s relying heavily on cavanaugh who cannot coach actively on game day because of numbers. I may not want to see anyone get fired but we need at least a shuffle. It’s not working.
On defense I think that side of the ball is fairly solid. If a team tries to go after white though idk what you can do. You don’t want to extend him with Dino coming closer to the end of his contract. But you could promote him to associate head coach.
I think on offense we are coming close to the end of the Dino Babers coaching tree. And to be honest the offense is now not new. It’s not catching everyone off guard. It’s not innovative. We are currently a less lethal option team that GT was with the triple option. At a place like Syracuse you need to be unique to win games where you are overmatched on talent and win with scheme.
Ultimately my pros and cons if we make a move this year with Dino:
Pros: 1. I don’t think you worry a lot about losing kids this class with a move. The class is small already. Decommits will happen anyway. Not losing sleep over a class not even up to our standard not coming.
2. The offense is bad. Fresh faces may help inject excitement.
3. With so much movement so far you could potentially get a coach without paying a buyout to a school.
Cons: 1. Financially you could be paying a lot of buy outs. Including Dino, any assistants not retained, and anyone hired. We are doing renovations so a lot of department money is allocated. That could significantly limit our canidate pool. We need to be prepared to offer a coach $5 mill per year. That’s what Rutgers is paying Schiano. If we can only offer $2.5 mill who are we getting? Probably someone worse.
2. Dino has not lost the team.
3. There is a good improvement from last season.
4. This doesn’t really effect my opinion, because players can’t dictate coaching changes or a direction change, but others will agree Tuckers comments were huge.
Ultimately I’m in the camp of keep Dino. Fire Gilbert. Shift around special teams and figure it out. Get a new philosophy on offense that’s not a complete makeover. But is different. I’ve been saying for a while, drop the slots, go double tight spread. It’s unique. We recruit to it easier. And it could feature matchups we could win with easier throws. But we have to be ahead of the curve at Syracuse. Can’t do what everyone else is and expect to win.
The game tomorrow will not effect my opinion at this point. Thoughts?
