Somehow Benny still hasn’t gotten the memo that we need him to be strong inside and on the boards. Three rebounds in the amount of time he played is not enough.

We needed a transfer portal or juco forward this year. Nae’qwan Tomlin a juco forward from Harlem was dying to hear from Cuse last cycle. He’s averaging 12 points a game for Kansas State this season. Malevy Leon’s a juco forward who was interested in Cuse 2 cycles ago is averaging 11 points per game at Bradley this year.

No reason we didn’t bring some one in. And we cannot be afraid to recruit over people on this roster. Other programs are doing it constantly.

Do you think there is an element of not recruiting over guys? Boeheim has always had his favorites, but he’s never been shy about running kids off or bringing in other options. I can’t put my finger on it. The staff has consistently shown a good eye for emerging talent (and then as we’ve all dissected can’t close it); you’d think some of that would apply in the portal or creative approaches to building a competitive roster. Something just doesn’t click and I can’t figure it out at all.

I don’t get it either. I haven’t dissected every top 25 team but a lot of the higher ranked teams have portal guys playing significant minutes. Some have 5th yr guys too. Maybe Benny will figure it out…Bell needs to toughen up but liked how he came through yesterday. Hope JT gets comfortable out there because I think his game is needed given the current roster ‘construction’.

That said, Guerrier, Richmond and Woody haven’t done much to start the season…at least we’re not Louisville. Just feels like the overall landscape is weaker this year…which may be good for this group if they can figure it out. They’ve lost last nights game the past few years or so…altho they did lose the Colgate last week…but improvement is improvement. Hope they win tonight and provide some further hope!

I think Richmond is a lot better than Colgate. They're a good team that's lost a few tough ones. Burton had a tough night but he might be an NBA player and I like the other two frontline guys too. Colgate just looks good against us. We didn't play well last night but we played with a lot of heart, unlike the Colgate game.

Last night was a big step up for us and I think we learned what we need to do better. I think Benny gets double digit rebounds tonight if he has his legs. We'll look for Jesse a lot more than we did last night. But St. John's will be tough. They start two seniors and three juniors with a big bruising center, Soriano. Jesse vs him is the key matchup.

There were five plays last night where Chris was directly involved in getting us a basket, with four made shots and one assist. Interestingly, all five put us in the lead.

Tied 2-2--Hits a three
Down 35-34--Hits a three
Down 44-43--Hits a three
Down 62-61--Makes nice lob assist to Jesse
Tied 68-68--Hits a game-winning two

That should help his confidence. It's one thing to hit a few buckets in a blowout, another to hit them in a tight, intense game in big spots. He has a long way to go but last night was a big step up for him in intensity. In watching over a dozen games of his last year, I'm pretty sure he never went to the floor for a loose ball. He did several times last night. He might not play a lot tonight because he has to be tired, even though he didn't show it last night.

Agreed - he made some legit plays on offense.

The team needs to anticipate more on loose balls/rebounds. Hopefully they’ll learn from last night.

I think some of the assistants would do things differently than Jim. Jim seemingly threw in the towel on 23 when he said something to the effect of “we may not get anyone in the 23 cycle at a press conference”, if it was up to certain assistances that wouldn’t be the case, of course Jim is the boss. They could still grab 2-3 assets in 23 if they wanted too, a mix of high school, international and juco.

When I see guys like Guerrier, Richmond, Woody, and Goodine leave the program and either struggle or not improve a lot, it makes me think that maybe our coaching staff isn’t as bad at developing players as people suggest. Seems like they were on a good trajectory before leaving.

Eh. I think it’s equal parts going to good/bad situations, limitations they always had, etc. Goodine just doesn’t belong near P5 levels. Q is constantly auditioning for the league instead of playing ball. Newton and Richmond just aren’t that good.
