Five Takeaways: Virginia Tech 38 Syracuse 10

Fair to say Dino has 4 games to really turn this thing around, or it’s all over. It would be such a massive setback to have to start all over, but there may not be a choice.
We can all try and claim that the 3-3-5 means you don’t need as many big bodies…..but SU is still so small to the extreme it’s impossible to overcome in my opinion. They just can’t physically compete. Shrader has been bad…but he doesn’t get much help either. The receivers are just not good enough for P5 football (to say nothing of the line). Really disappointing because even through the Clemson game this looked like a good football team.

Who are some coaches that Cuse should look at?
I’ll jump in the Bob Chesney pool; although that may be too big of a leap. That said, I hope they rip off 4 straight wins and avoid the issue. I’m not saying that as a big Dino fan - I’ve never been sold on him. Its just not good for a program like SU to start over and know next year will be worse.

One thing to call out: any Syracuse fan that thinks they should have stayed in the Big East and now be playing in a lesser football conference is extremely lost. That’s the mentality of dropping a youth team down levels so they can win games and mommy and daddy can feel good for Junior. It’s just not getting it. SU would be a complete shambles without that ACC money.

2 winning seasons since 2016, if he doesn’t make a bowl this year, I’m fine tearing it down and starting over. The transfer portal can help accelerate the rebuild process. Obviously the right coaching hire will be key.

Eric Dungey had some very choice things to say about Dino and Co after the game...Dino just seems like a shell of himself from the man that was hired in 2016. We continue to make baffling coaching decisions and the body language of the players wreaked of "i don't care"...getting blown out by one of the worst teams in P5 on national television should be humbling, but they were laughing/joking around.

Rutgers took this team behind the woodshed...i think it's time for a new approach. our offensive minded coach has the worst offensive unit i think i have ever seen.

I agree with everyone….just stuck on it not being ideal. The scattershot recruiting approach always bothered me….and the massive and long running issues with penalties and mistakes speak to real discipline issues.

Spot on, Mike. Some additional thoughts on the game:

1-The team and Dino didn’t seem to have any fire. Three penalties to start the game showed they weren’t ready to play. The game plan and play calling was weak. Insisting we could run the ball on them, even at halftime, when we couldn’t was stubborn and off mark. That’s all we had for a game plan? What was Plan B?

2- 17 offensive linemen on the team (or thereabouts) and this is he best we’ve got??? This performance was embarrassing and pitiful. Not to call out individuals, but Bleich should be a leader by now and he is good for at least one or two key penalties per game. I thought Enrique Cruz was going to be our next star on the OL, but he seems to have woefully regressed. Who was Dino referring to when he said one of our OL went down around halftime and another went in who has barely played? I couldn’t tell watching the game on tv. Some guys need to step up.

3) Zero targets for Jones and Gill, one target for Brown, 2 targets for Hatcher. How are we supposed to make plays if we don’t throw to the WRs? I know the protection was bad, but even so. And Shrader doesn’t even look like the same QB we had earlier in the season. What’s happened to him?

4) Not sure what to say about the defense. We couldn’t stop them the whole game. Very disappointing. I’m hard pressed to put my finger on any one thing.

We need to come out with some fire and energy against BC in the Dome and get off to a quick start. This game is a must win for the program.

The receivers can’t get open. Maybe some of it is trust from Shrader, but those guys are just not P5 caliber.

shrader holds onto the ball way too long. He would rather take a 20 yard loss than throw it away. He is lost back there

He’s lost, line can’t block, wr besides Gadsden can’t separation and defense looks physically overmatched.

How can a fresh start not be appealing especially with the portal.

Yep what do we have to lose? As long as we hire a good coach, he will likely go 4-0 with the OOC we have next year and can he do much worse in the ACC then Dino?? His record in conference is horrific since he has been here.
