Post Standard saying he's announcing Saturday. If you can land him and Bunch it will slightly soften the blow of today.

I caught bits of this game online. Blue Ridge is a very good high school team but they are not near the level of the top high school programs. Their opponents are sometimes on their level and sometimes well below. Maliq is clearly the star that the team revolves around, but he does not look to dominate the ball. At this level, he has a very well rounded game.

The first Blue Ridge game I saw was a couple weeks ago that Blue Ridge won in a big blowout. Maliq had about ten points all on dunks, but he surprised me by having about the same number of assists. He didn't look to score in a blowout, but being a great teammate he constantly looked for his teammates. His rebounding and defense were fine, but it was his passing that really stood out. He is an excellent passer. He both sees the court and delivers a pass very well. What I especially like is that he rarely dribbles before he passes. He catches the ball and usually without a dribble or any hesitation he's sending it to an open teammate. He could develop into a very good high post big for us. Once he got down on the floor for a loose ball (with his team up about forty points) on the defensive end and then made a foul line to foul line pass from his knees. On another defensive possession, he got the rebound, looked up court and made a Wes Unseld-like two-handed over-the-head outlet pass to the other end of the court and hit the kid in the numbers like he was running a post pattern. Like I said, Maliq can really pass the ball and he is a very willing passer.

In the close games like today's game--it was about a six point lead most of the second half--Maliq looks to score more because his team needed it. Besides his usual points around the basket, I saw him put it on the floor from outside and drive a few times. He also surprised me by taking and making a corner three, the only three attempt I saw. The camera angle didn't give a good look at his mechanics, but the ball looked like a nice shot. He also has a good stroke from the free throw line with a nice soft shot. Maliq doesn't have the explosive athleticism of some of the very highly ranked players, but he could develop into an important player for SU.

Pearl I really appreciate your insights and summaries on this board. It’s a huge asset to our community.

I only caught bits of this game. From what I saw, it was a ragged game with lots of turnovers and whistles. I think it was the third game in three days so that might partially explain it. Maliq didn't have one of his stronger games but he still made some big plays, including getting out for a big block of a three-point attempt very late in the game. Blue Ridge was losing almost the entire game and was down close to double digits with about six minutes to go before they turned things around.
