We got zero rebounds in forty minutes from our “power” forward.

Lot of focus on Chris, but it’s going to be a long process with him. He played guard at Wasatch and never looked to rebound. He’s not a physical player. Now he has to learn to rebound against much stronger and older guys. He’s getting better and at least trying to get there. But the aggressiveness is not there yet.

The aggressiveness is there sometimes for Benny. One thing I watch closely early in a game is Benny’s movement on the defensive end. It wasn’t there yesterday at nearly the level it sometimes is.

I’m sure players would say it’s harder to rebound out of the zone. True. But Jesse does it. Quincy and Oshae were consistently near double figures at forward in the zone.

ND had 12 offensive rebounds. Goodwin, a perimeter player, got four offensive rebounds.

We had 25 defensive rebounds. Joe dropped down to get five of them. Judah got two.

Like us, ND had 25 defensive rebounds. But we only had 5 offensive rebounds, all by Jesse.

So ND got 25 of 30 of the rebounds off our misses, 84%. We got 25 of 37 of their misses, 67%. Notre Dame is weak inside and have out rebounded their generally weak opponents by one per game.

btw, Maliq has thirteen rebounds in fifty total minutes. Along with thirteen points. That’s 10.4 per forty. And zero turnovers. Just sayin’. Some things in this world are unexplainable.

Bell did a little better on the boards against ND, getting two rebounds in 10 minutes. But Benny had 0 rebounds in 22 minutes. We need more from Benny if we are going to be successful. I agree about Maliq. He can give us some boards if he is in the game.

Yeah I thought Benny would have made more progress by now. And you’re absolutely right; his activity levels early tend to tell you how it will go. He doesn’t tend to work into the game if he’s flat from the start.
I’m not sure what the story with Maliq is. I do think he will get eaten up in conference play….but I’d rather let him and learn than not. Getting him minutes with an eye on development isn’t going to be the difference of SU having a great season or not. But it could pay off down the road.
