Quarterback

In my opinion, Devito has done nothing to lose the starting role and Shrader has done nothing better to jump Tommy.

Tommy even seems faster when running, but it’s likely that his handoff/pull is smoother, keeping the DL at bay a bit longer.

I’m pretty much along the same lines. I do think Tommy has been better because Tucker seems to be better with Tommy out there. I feel like Tuckers performance dictates how well the quarterback does for both guys.

Both have made mistakes, to were if we had a true #1Qb (someone not on the roster) , neither would see the field. Since we don't have that Devito should start, can make all the throws and has the arm for the deep ball. Shrader has better pocket precense and can take a hit or two on the run due to his frame. But he's really only accurate enough for 20 yrd max throws, so we are limited in that offensively in that sense with him.

I’m not sold on DeVito’s arm. I’m not impressed with the success DeVito has had throwing downfield either. It feels like he doesn’t throw downfield enough or holds the ball too long in the pocket. Maybe playcalling can be attributed to some of that but when plays break down, I don’t think he can make something happen. My argument for Shrader is that he resembles Eric Dungey. Similar measurables and playmaking ability when plays breakdown. He could be a version of Dungey. I’m confident enough based off what he did in his short time in the SEC that he has ability to throw. He also has eligibility on his side and it would be ideal to start molding him into the future while still having an opportunity to win now. Continue to utilize 2 QB system but i’d have bulk of snaps going to Shrader.

GS had plenty of opportunities to show everyone something against Albany and really didn’t. TD is SUs best option right now. Just like the Ohio game, I think TD will play the whole game.

Bringing this up again now after the Liberty game. I felt going in I expected it to be Devito. After the game I think there’s a bigger discrepancy in arm talent than I had initially thought. I think we all knew there was one. But yeah it’s apparently a HUGE gap in talent. That talent gap doesn’t always translate to on field success. The bigger question at this point is how do you stay in 3rd and manageable. I’ve crunched some numbers:

I’m going to preface by saying you almost can’t count the data against Albany. They really screwed some of the data because we just out classed them:

1. 37.5% of drives with negative plays or penalties resulted in points. Without Albany that number is 20%.

2. 55% of drives without negative plays or penalties resulted in points. Without Albany it’s 46%. If you include missed field goals we are up to 61%. Without Albany but including missed field goals we are at 53%.

3. Against Ohio 100% of drives without negative yards resulted in points. 33% of drives with negative yards resulted in points. 24 points on drives without negative yards. 3 points on drives with.

4. Against Rutgers 0% of drives with negative yards resulted in points. 20% of drives without negative yards resulted in points. One was a missed FG so if you count that, that number is 40%. The drives without negative yards and no points were primarily 3 and out incomplete passes. 58% of all drives had negative yards.

5. Against Albany 75% of all drives had negative yards had negative plays. And we scored 62. An anomaly.

6. Against Liberty 58% of our drives didn’t have negative yards. We scored on 43% of those drives. 40% of the drives with negative yards we scored.

which means it’s a much bigger deal to avoid negative plays and penalties. We have not had a ton of 3 and outs like last year. But there has been some. Mostly 3 incomplete passes which keeps us 3rd and 10. It’s a bigger deal to our offense that Tommy will take an 8 yard sack than the 30 yard pass that Tommy would have hit the play before. We are not built to climb out of a 2nd and 20.

I honestly think that niether quarterback has separated themselves. If Tommy doesn’t take sacks or just takes off running if his first read is not there then I prefer Tommy. If he’s taking sacks then I prefer Garrett. Either way the offense with either quarterback needs to roll through Tucker. Positive yardage is huge. One bad play or penalty ruins drives for us.

also the offense is not nearly as bad as people think. Eliminate penalties. We can score. Most of the time we are not stopped by the defense. We just can’t convert after taking a holding call or false start. But we can move the football.

if Schmidt gets these penalties under control we will win ACC games no matter who is playing.

Nice analysis. It’s a bit odd to think about it that way, but now that you mention it, it does seem like most of our drive stoppers aren’t due to great defense or turnovers (there have been a few) but are due to self inflicted challenges (penalties).

Shrader will likely get sacked less often, but is les likely to be able to dig out of a 1st and 20 than TD would.

I was on the “keep Tommy” train, but the team had a different mojo with Shrader in. I’m hooong this isn’t just a one game thing that Liberty was surprised for. I don’t think we’ll be able to pass when we absolutely need it, but I’ll worry about that when it happens I guess. We can win at FSU with a good run game and solid D.

I will say that I’m absolutely intrigued to see how this goes!
