Syracuse Blown Out at Louisville

Where do we go from here, Mike? I had to miss the game, but taped it to watch later. Now I’m not sure I will bother. Can you breakdown what went wrong on each side of the ball?

What was our starting OL and were they not able to protect Shrader or open any running lanes? I’m surprised we couldn’t generate more passing yards as that was supposed to be LV’s weak area and they reportedly stuffed the box daring us to throw. Where was Sharod Johnson? I didn’t see his name listed. Did Gadsden play at all?

That was our worst defensive performance of the year. What went wrong and how do we fix it? Did we generate any pass rush?

Defense was terrible. The cards seemed to score on almost every possession. The offensive line played worse then they have all year. It was bad.

Offensively, they moved the ball the first two drives. However, it snowballed on them and as Louisville kept scoring, it looked like they got away from their identity. That and they were forced into second and third and long situations, which is not Syracuse's strength.

Defensively, Louisville's outside zone runs took Syracuse's athletic linebackers out of a lot of plays. That seemed to give the Orange a lot of problems. Then Louisville went play action and took shots deep that Syracuse did not defend well. Mikel Jones got ejected for targeting in the second quarter, and any chance of the defense turning things around went away at that point.

To me, the game turned on Louisville's second drive. Jones sacked Cunningham to set up a 3rd and 15 with Syracuse trailing 7-3. A stop gives the offense the ball back with a chance to take the lead and everything stays on schedule. Instead, Eric Coley blew a coverage assignment and UL's TE was wide open for a first down. Louisville scored a TD to make it 14-3 and it snowballed from there.

Cooley was terrible today. That play stands out and on the first big run play by the cards Black was clearly held and no call. The momentum was with the cards. I really think HCDB needs to go. He was brought in here because of his knowledge of a scheme, everyone thought that offensive scheme was the answer. He is a terrible game coach. He can’t recruit/develop offensive players at all to the point where after 6 years he now has to run a completely different system EVEN THOUGH he has been recruiting to that system for 6 seasons! The lack of offensive player development is eye popping. Players can’t even catch the ball. It has been a problem with every single WR that has spent their whole time here.
Everyone that was screaming for SS to go after only 2 seasons of not making a bowl (and one of those seasons being riddled with injuries) should be doing the same for HCDB right now.
I know he has 2 more chances to make a bowl game and if he does he gets to stay. I just don’t like the direction this program is going.

We came out pretty flat. As much gruff as the offensive line is taking for the game is a little overboard. Yes we were missing some starters that absolutely would have made them better. But that crew today was in fact better than anything last season. We got behind early. We are not a team that is built to come back. We are one dimensional. Shrader cannot throw for 100 yards even with any sort of regularity. Gilbert refuses to call bootlegs, which Shrader is more comfortable throwing outside the pocket. Without a passing game and down multiple possessions early is not a winning formula.

I understand wanting the switch at quarterback. I really do. But I don’t understand not switching back when it wasn’t working. Now we are seemingly destined to not have a passing attack this year. Which Garrett adds some portions that are really good. But right now we are the old Georgia Tech team without recruiting to that system.

I’m ready to start the Justin Lamson era. I wanna see what the kid has. Tommy wasn’t it. Takes too many sacks and he was lost on a lot of reads. Shrader is not it. He misses so much we can’t pass. And we have good WRs.

Fire Gilbert. Step up Justin Lamson.

Don’t get me wrong, we have seen some mediocre passing by GS but the play calling wasn’t there, there were drops by the downfield passing game, or the guy was running for his life. Why would we put in a freshman That may not have even seen practice outside of scout team? I don’t understand this logic by the fan base.
