Syracuse Football Scholarship Situation Moving Forward

Great analysis, Mike! I just went through the same exercise and came up with the same numbers. I wasn’t sure if any of our long snappers or holders (Bolinsky, Midkiff) were on scholarship, but you have cleared that up. Darton is also non-scholarship.

What scares me is Babers’ seeming aversion to acquiring transfers from the portal. We will be hard pressed to find enough good high school talent left to fill the roster (I don’t see us taking 25 for sure) and transfers in can be the quickest talent upgrade. Plus we know we will have more transfers out. I’m hoping we get a minimum of 5-6 good guys through the transfer portal. Maybe more depending on how many more transfers out we have. What are your thoughts?

Thought the exact same thing about his comments on the portal. His recruiting and player development has led us to all losing seasons but one (thanks Dungey). The portal and juco allows teams like Cuse to get a quality of players we haven’t been able to land out of high school. Marrone got a lot of out JUCO players.

This was so frustrating to read.

I don’t think it means he won’t use the portal. He has and will. The starting QB is a portal guy. Starting BS is a portal guy. Starting OG is a portal guy. The question provides important context to his quote. He was specifically asked if the plan is to use the portal to fill “a lot” of slots and he was basically outlining why he wouldn’t use it for that purpose. They’ll still be active in the portal and look to land players that help the roster.

Mike, can you tell us about this new one-time NCAA rule allowing teams to replace up to 7 transfer portal losses with incoming transfers of their own? I guess the intent is to enable teams to reach the 85 player limit with all of transfers taking place. How is this expected to effect Syracuse? Might this make us more aggressive in the portal this upcoming season?

It has not officially passed yet but is expected to. That said the way it is supposed to work is you get 25 players you can sign. Those players can be any combo of high school/juco recruits or transfers. Then, for every transfer player you lose, you can add to that 25 limit up to a maximum of 7 more. So 32 would be your max. But I believe those extra 7 would have to be transfers as well, but that part I am not fully clear on. And Dino Babers indicated in a recent press conference that there are parts to that whole situation and how the numbers work that the public doesn't know yet. So it could change from what we think we know.

Mike, looking into this further, it looks like it already passed in Oct. based upon an article I read in The Athletic dated Oct. 6. It sounds like you can add to the 25 either with high school players or transfers. But the 7 transfer portal transfers that you can replace have to be transfers out after the fall semester or Dec. 15, 2021. So it looks like all our mid-season transfers won’t count toward the 7 possible replacements. Check it out further, but that’s my interpretation from the one article. I’m sure you will be able to get clarification after further research and find out what it means for SU football.

Yes. That is the case for next season I was speaking about permanently after the 22 class. Transfers after December are what triggers the extra slots for 22.
