Tafara Gapare

Part of the issue I have in that article….he’s not a big guard. 6’3” 190 for him is strong so he can play bigger perhaps….but that’s not actually a big guard.
I think you’re right on strong. He’s listed as 190 where as Mintz is listed on 247 as 165 and Copeland is listed as 175.

I watched some of Gapare for the first time at the Louisville event. My first impression wasn't great because he got beat for a couple rebounds he was in the best position to get but he didn't go as hard for the ball as the opponent did. Although he's about 6'9", he was on the perimeter on offense more than near the basket. He's got a pretty good looking shot and he's a good passer, but what really stuck out to me was what a good dribbler he is for a big guy. His posture is mostly straight up, but he is surprisingly very agile with quick side to side bounce, even with the ball. Once on the break he dribbled through tight traffic changing direction several times.

He finished with 6 points, 8 rebounds, probably playing 2/3 of the game. The rebounding number is higher than what I would've thought because when I was watching I never saw him get many and I didn't see him get any tough rebounds in traffic. From what I saw, the thought of him reclassifying to 2022 is not a good idea. He's not ready to play a lot of minutes at a high major.

Right now, 247 has him at 46 (corrected from my original post) in 2023 and the composite doesn't even have him ranked. He's early in his journey but he has loads of potential and seems like a Syracuse forward, the kind of skilled and athletic versatile big forward we've had a number of. I really hope we can get a commitment.

I thought Gapare moved up to #47 in the latest 247 ranking. Did that change already? Disappointed to hear he wasn’t rebounding aggressively, but still positive about him and happy to hear reports about his good dribbling, passing, and shooting.

ah good catch, you're right. I think the 94 is his 247 numerical score. He's ranked 46, which seems about right. He can develop to be very good inside and he had a couple of nice finishes but right now he's not very aggressive.

Tafara was initially No. 47 in the new 247Sports rankings, although he moved up to No. 46, I assume, because Elijah Fisher reclassified from 23 to 22, so everyone behind him moved up a spot. And I would imagine that as other individual recruiting services rank Gapare, he'll enter into the composite/consensus ratings for 247Sports and On3.

He’s played such generally awful competition. He’s gonna need time to adjust/learn how to compete at the highest level all the time.

If it’s DePaul, I’d like to know what they’re doing to get interest from highly ranked prospects. It’s probably a mistake if he’s reclassifying. He's not ready.

I'm wondering if it's actually true that Gaspare will be announcing within the next week. I can't find anyone else to say he is and DePaul sources seem to contain a lot of wishful thinking.

I’m not saying I buy this report/news…but I can see where DePaul has some appeal in the NIL world if they leverage it correctly. Now us older folks wouldn’t likely buy into it given how irrelevant DePaul is in the Chicago landscape and always has been…but it’s a decent story.

It’s now ok to pay kids, and I believe they got in trouble for paying kids when it wasn’t allowed.

247S also has a story up on Tafara planning to announce in the next few days. I have no intel, but could be that DePaul and MD are the front-runners?
