Five Takeaways: Syracuse Tops St. Rose

This season might be the most unsure I’ve ever been going into it. Many years it’s been “easy” to be sure about a good team or a bad one. This one could swing either way for me.
The guards are obviously extremely athletic, and should be a problem. Judah is not a great man defender, but hopefully he improves. The shooting is by far my biggest concern at this stage. Judah/JJ don’t give me much confidence in that regard, and history combined with their fundamentals make me skeptical of consistency from Taylor/Bell. McLeod has been more promising that I expected, which is great. But we are going to see a LOT of Brown at the 5. Hima is obviously very limited, but at least can bang and block shots. Carey is nowhere near ready to play at the ACC level, and I’m not seeing enough to make me think that’s gonna change any time soon. Patterson is 3 years away at best….so interior depth is a possible concern.
I think I still land in a place that Judah/JJ are so quick and aggressive and tough that they’ll make a ton of plays and make things happen (and I’m optimistic about Cuffe). I think they’ll get enough from JT/Bell/Brown/McLeod…..and then it comes down to Benny. Whatever happened last night, has the light gone on? If he plays anywhere near his potential I think this could be a solid team. If not, and if other parts struggle, could be a tough year.
